The American Bison is one of the many animals found along the Oregon Trail. They were plentiful, resulting in them being hunted by pioneers for meat. However, they were easily scared and could easily kill travelers who failed at killing them.
Rattlesnakes were another danger along the trail, but they tended to stay away from wagons because of their small size. However, a bite from one left untreated was deadly. It is possible to hear them when they rattle the segments on their tails, hence the name.
Prairie dogs were another animal found on the Oregon Trail, however they were not dangerous in the slightest. As a matter of fact, they were so lovable that some pioneers kept them as pets. They also dug small tunnels beneath the prairies, popping out every once and awhile, providing entertainment for small children and weary adults.
Pronghorns are animals that were plentiful on the Oregon Trail, and still are. They would sometimes wander onto campsites, often leading to hunts. They were good for food and pelts.
